Collapse Weave Workshop and Dévoré for Weavers and Knitters Seminar with Anne Field

April 9 & 10 MGHW hosted Anne Field teaching her Collapse Weave workshop. Looms are warped with blocks of fine Merino plied yarns and superfine overtwisted Merino singles yarns. One woven and wet finished, the fine yarns release their twist energy and cause the finished samples to draw up and become very elastic, lively three-dimensional cloth!

Friday, April 8 Anne presented a lecture on dévoré, also known as "burnout." Dévoré is a technique we are familiar with when it is applied to velvet cloth. With handwoven and machine or hand knitted cloth made of both cellulose and other yarns, the cellulose content is dissolved in places leaving some transparent areas. Designs are made by stencils. Finished articles will be handled and discussed.

Anne is an internationally renowned weaver, spinner, teacher and author from Christchurch, New Zealand. annefield.co.nz

Ten Points from the September 25th guild Meeting

  1. THE TEN POINTS FROM NOV. 20TH MEETING:

    1. We had another great meeting. We talked about the Newsletter, and decided if we want a great Newsletter, we all have to provide Mary Anne with articles. She is doing a great job, and should be provided with enough information each month to fill this small Newsletter. The Committee Chairmen are supposed to write an article each month, but if you see or hear of anything of interest please write it down and send it to Mary Anne. She can then use the article, when she has a space to fill. Leigh Anne has promised to provide our newsletter with a creative input monthly. Anything from Leigh Anne and her expertize, will be great for us all. All attempts to spice up the Newsletter from any member will be greatly appreciated.
    2. The Equipment Auction Committee is hard at work to provide us with a list and minimum bids on the equipment going up for auction December 11… at our Christmas Party Potluck at St John’s. More info will follow regarding both. You will have enough time to inspect and bid. The bidding will close next year some time. Remember to bring items you do not need (weaving and craft oriented) and we will auction off these items too, like we do every year, and the money goes towards our education/workshops.
    3. The Anne Field workshop was discussed, and we will require a down payment in January, which will be around $50.00. More information will follow on this also, but be prepared. It looks like we have the maximum 18 participants. We do have a waiting list if you have changed your mind and want to participate. It is a long time until April and a spot might become available.
    4. Angela brought up the Kathryn Webber workshop for spring 2012. We discussed whether we should have a 2 or 3 day workshop. The 3 day workshop would entail a day of dyeing our own yarn. Kathryn Weber will teach us how to efficiently arrive at the end product. We need to get as much as possible from these phenomenal artists, when we have them here in Memphis. I think most of us (14) agreed that a 3 day workshop would be the best. We have time to prepare and save up. That’s why deciding on whom to invite to teach our major workshops should be done at least a year ahead…We will discuss Kathryn’s workshop at the January meeting again and have some monetary information for you at that time.
    5. This time of the year we update the Directory. Everybody has a responsibility to make sure we have the right information. Wait a few days and then go to our website and check out your name, address, phone, and e-mail and make sure it is correct. Angela is going to update the directory and post it shortly.
    6. We talked about the creative task we are supposed to do. It has to do with our April workshop - trying to find something in nature that reminds us of Collapse Weave. I brought some silk cocoons which I bought from Habu some time ago. I’m going to use them, as they are, in a pocket-weaving-transparency eventually. Please look around and see what you can find and share with us.
    7. Jennifer Sargent is holding a Beginning Weaving Class. Date and time has not been decided yet. Please contact Jennifer (jsargent@mca.edu) if you are interested. Several members at the meeting showed great interest. Thank you Jennifer for doing this.
    8. Angela Schneider met with the Tablet Weaving Study Group after Linda’s program. I’m sure you can still be part of this. It is truly amazing what you can do with some cards and yarn. Please contact Angela (angela@memphisfiberarts.org) if you are interested.
    9. HGA’s Small Expressions 2011 Exhibit will be held in June in Nashville – The Tennessee State Museum. If you want to participate the dead line is in March. Go to their website hga@weavespindye.org for more information.
    10. I’m saving the best for last. Linda Weghorst ‘s program about how her dream came through by visiting Ghana with her family, and how she has had this long time fascination with the people of Ghana and their traditionally woven Kente Cloth was very impressive. To learn about how this primitively woven cloth, tells a story – or speaks to the people, and has to be put together long piece by long piece by an expert was truly amazing. She showed us plenty of samples of this colorful, woven cloth. Thank you Linda. As I have said before, you never disappoint us. You are a true gem among us – another super program.
Linda is having a Painted Warp workshop in January (22-23). She needs to know how many of us are going to participate. We already know it is going to be great. We signed up at the meeting, but if you forgot to sign up or wasn’t at the meeting, please let Linda know asap if you want to participate. lgweghorst@gmail.com. She has to order enough supplies.
If I forgot to mention something I’m sorry. This was another Fun, Information Packed Guild Meeting……another proof of the fact that This Guild really Rocks. Thanks to all of you for making it this way.
    Eva

The snacks brought by Carol and Debra were also awesome. Thank you both.

This Guild rocks,
Eva

Saturday, April 30, 2011, 11:00am – Incoming president Jackie McNamara hosted our end-of year picnic. Our weavers turned up with a delicious feast on a beautiful day for a picnic. We had a brief meeting discussing guild business, future plans, and possible gatherings for hands-on activities over the summer. After lunch 10 weavers made miniature baskets with Angela.
